JIVAMUKTI YOGA
Origins: Jivamukti yoga, translated as “the state of liberation”, was founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life, who were inspired by various gurus including Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati and Shri Swami Nirmalananda.
Teachings: While the asanas are very much Ashtanga orientated, there is a strong spiritual component. Every Jivamukti class has an element of Bhakti yoga (devotion through chanting), Nada yoga, (using sound and uplifting music), meditation as well as spiritual teaching of the Yoga Sutras. Ahimsa, which is practicing “nonharm” and promoting a vegetarian lifestyle are also some of the primary tenets of this practice.
Class description: Each class begins with chanting, “Stira Sukam Asanam”, which means “our connection to the earth is steady and joyful”. The asanas are similar to those in an Ashtanga class and the music is very upbeat and inspiring. At the end of each class there is a 10-minute period of Savasana for meditation and relaxation.
Who can practice? Anyone who enjoys a dynamic, physically and intellectually challenging style can practice Jivamukti yoga.
Teacher training: The teaching course takes place over one month at the Omega Institute in New York and is a very intensive programme. It includes teaching of yoga philosophy, asanas, anatomy and physiology, basic Sanskrit, the Yoga Sutras and satsang theory including chanting, meditation, japa and mantra.
