Hold that tiger! Your mind

The question I ask you is: who can untie the bell string on the neck of a tiger?
Before reading any further, stop and see if you can work out the answer?

Well? Have you solved this Zen question? The answer, of course, is very, very simple. The person who tied it on! Which brings me to my point? The tiger, of course, is your mind, and the only person that can produce sweet sounds and thoughts and happiness from this tiger, is yourself.

Yoga offers just as simple a technique for making the mind sweet each day. The moment you awaken each morning, and even before the day has dawned for you, in a semi half-asleep state, you take a long breath in though both nostrils for a count of six. Do this three times. Then, for a further three times, increase the count to ten – in for ten, hold for ten and out for ten, lying on your back in bed. Unbelievably simple isn’t it? But you have already cleared the windscreen of your mind, so that the day to come will be fresh, clean and sweet. You will see things through a clear mind, as they really are, and will not be creating snakes out of all the odd bits of rope that you come across during the day.

This waking up moment is probably the most important area of each day of your life, because it determines your attitudes, likes and dislikes and subsequent actions for the future day. Going to bed at night is the recharging area, but waking up is the area of mastery over your destiny. Having done these breaths, the next thing is to draw up first one leg to the chest, then the other, then both, before getting out of bed. This should then be followed by half a minute of shoulder stand. It will enable you to put a sweet sounding bell around the neck of your own tiger, besides taking away the unpleasant stiffness which is such a common complaint on awakening today, due to the absence of walking in peoples lives.
